A couple of years ago the head of the International Justice Mission spoke to our congregation at Montreat Presbyterian Church. Chris and I were very moved by his message and sought him out at the end of the service to ask what, if anything, we could specifically do to support the IJM.
Beyond financial support and prayer there was not much more we could do. (They need lawyers and we are not gifted in that field).
I admire their vision. Their tactic is direct, focused, and, I believe most importantly of all, effective. The strategy involves interaction with and education of local law enforcement to help free men, women, and children, even entire families, from the chains of slavery. The statistics on modern day slavery are alarming. The IJM has focused all of its efforts on bringing worldwide attention to this issue. Finally, the IJM is gaining some international momentum. They have produced a short documentary that will be released soon, but in the meantime, here is a trailer.
My hope is that word will continue to spread about this serious dehumanizing issue. As Americans our understanding of slavery is limited to the black and white photos of small African American children picking cotton. Unfortunately, slavery has not been limited to the frames of photos. Please take the time to watch the following trailer and do a little research on the IJM. It is a ministry that certainly brings glory to the God who desires us to be set free.
